Coffee price increase in 2025: Causes and impacts on Czech consumers

Reasons for the rise in green coffee prices
Problems in Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer: Brazil, which produces about 40% of the world's coffee, is struggling with extreme weather. First came a historic drought that significantly reduced yields, and then frosts that damaged large areas of coffee trees. This means that the country will be able to supply less coffee to the market, which increases the price of the raw material.
Long-term market deficit: Another factor is the increase in transportation and logistics costs. Fuel prices have risen, shipping is facing delays and a shortage of containers, further complicating the distribution of coffee around the world. Added to this is the weakening of the currencies of some producing countries, which is making exports more expensive. It is estimated that in the 2025-26 season, the global coffee deficit will reach 8.5 million bags, which is the fifth consecutive year that demand has exceeded supply.
Economic and logistical challenges: Reduced water levels in the Panama Canal and other logistical challenges complicate the transportation of coffee from producers to distributors, leading to further increases in costs.

Impact on final consumers
The increased cost of raw coffee is expected to be reflected in prices for end consumers. Espresso prices in cafes could increase by 2 to 3 crowns, while packaged coffee prices in retail are expected to increase by 15-20%.
Some are considering adjusting prices for end customers, others are looking for ways to reduce operating costs or offer alternative products. It is expected that the price of a cup of espresso could increase by several crowns, which may affect consumer habits.
